Frequently Asked Questions

The Eldersburg Rogue Runners

Is ERR a part of any High School?

No. We are an affiliate of Freedom Area Recreation Council (FARC).

What does FARC do for ERR?

FARC is a tremendous resource. They help us secure facilities when we need them - and by being an affiliate of FARC - we have priority over other non-affiliated organizations. We FARC also provides us with liability coverage for all of the events we sponsor.

How Does ERR raise money?

ERR raises money through three primary sources:

•  Donations - if you are a corporation on an individual and want to get a big bang for your donation, ERR is a great return on your generosity. 100% of your donation goes straight to improving the programs we offer. The following businesses have supported ERR: D'Argenio & Associates - Real Estate Appraisers, The Chop House, Dairy Queen, Eldersburg Optical, Falls Road Running Store, Feet First Sports, Freedom Digital Media, Hawaiian Snowball Stand, Quiznos, Subway, TBG Financial, & Wall Mart. If you are a member of ERR, we hope you will support the businesses in return.

•  Membership Dues - annual membership dues help cover the operating costs of the club - accounting fees, bank fees, website/server costs, etc.

•  Fund Raisers - we sponsor several fund raisers: a Basket Bingo and the Labor Day Rogue Race are our two primary sources of revenue in this area.

Some programs we sponsor are straight pass-thru expenses. For instance, anyone attending the Summer Running Retreat pays a fee to go on the retreat and that money covers the cost of that event - if we make money on these events, it is very little and they are not designed to be a source of revenue, but we do hope they break even.

What does ERR do with the Money it Raises?

ERR sponsors several programs and the money raised helps reduce the cost of those programs to participants. For instance, for the past two years, ERR has sent athletes to the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships in NYC. Last year, we had participants sign up for this from every high school in Carroll County except one. The cost of this event was reduced because ERR helped purchase uniforms and pay for the charter bus.

ERR is a volunteer organization - we have no salaried employees and no individual receives compensation from ERR.

ERR has purchased items to support the local teams. We have also purchased software and an electronic timer that can be used for Road Races, Track and Field Meets and Cross Country Meets.

How is ERR Governed?

ERR is a non profit corporation governed by a Board of Directors made up of eight adults. It is envisioned that no Board Member will serve ERR longer than four years, but there are no term limits.

We are experiencing our first turnover on the Board and are pleased with the performance of the past Board and the prospects are bright for the organization. The remaining positions on the Board will turnover in the next 12 months.

Who maintains the website?

We are grateful that Bob Ward is doing this. He has shown a lot of energy and creativity in building the site. It continues to grow and he has more ideas than we can all keep up with. If you have talent in this area, please let Bob know. If you have suggestions, we welcome them.

The content of the website is the responsibility of the Board. The day-to-day oversight is provided by Bob Ward, Dan Jones and Pete Lester.

How does ERR keep track of the money I contribute?

ERR has a system of checks and balances in place to ensure that money is properly spent. No one person can approve an expenditure. Our Treasurer is Jack Mull. He has two operational treasurers that report to him: one for Track and Field and one for Cross Country.

What programs are offered by ERR?

ERR sponsors:

•  Summer Training Runs - nightly Monday -Friday and on the weekends as well. We usually start in early June and run through Labor Day.

•  Summer Running Retreat - the summer running retreat is for High School Runners in the area. We take a group of them up to the Mountains so that they can run in a nice, new and different setting while also learning more about the sport. It is a great way for Freshmen or first year runners to figure out if it is a sport they want to pursue.

•  Summer Track & Field Team - this program is new in 2005. We hope to sponsor a summer All-comers Meet and help athletes compete in a regional meet as well. This program is for young people entering grades 5 - 12.

•  Foot Locker Cross Country Championships - Each year, we sponsor a group to attend this prestigious event. In 2003 we took 16 athletes. In 2004, we took 30. The event is held at Van Courtland Park, in NYC. This event is a great way to wrap up the Cross Country Season and also see how athletes from our area stack up against regional competition.

•  Labor Day Rogue Race - Last year's race was a huge success and a great start for what we hope will be an annual event and a benchmark for ERR.

Future Plans include:

•  Sponsoring more road races. Not all of them will be as "sophisticated" as the Labor Day Rogue Race. we think there is room for more frequent races that cost $5 (or maybe even less to our members)to enter and provide a few door prizes to the participants.

•  Do a better job serving the adult runners in our area. More will follow on this. If you have ideas, we would like to hear them.

•  Support/Encourage the county to improve area running trails and connect existing sidewalks/road shoulders.
